Charles
Finney - Part 5
Charles Finney
had no proper training for ministry. So he had no desire to preach
in large towns or cities. Therefore he started preaching in schoolhouses,
barns and groves in the villages. He went to a small village where
there were three churches and he presented himself as a deacon. They
gladly accepted him in their congregation. They had no Church building
of their own and so they used to worship in schoolhouse. It was big
enough to contain all the children of the whole village. Charles started
preaching on alternative weeks and also in weekdays whenever he wanted.
People were very much interested in the preaching of Charles Finney
and they came in large numbers to hear him. After many weeks he saw
that the people listened to him with interest but he realized that
they were not walking holy before God as they should. So one day at
the end of his sermon, Charles told them that he did not come to please
them but to secure their salvation so that they could go to heaven
when they die. He asked them to come forward if they wanted that Christ
should rule over them completely. Further he said that if they did
not want Christ to rule over them they can leave the church.
When none came forward, Charles told them that they have publicly
rejected Jesus. Charles could see the angered faces of people. People
started leaving the Church and then Charles told that he will be preaching
again the next day. Within a few minutes people stood up and left
the Church except for one Mr. McC. Charles and McC. decided to fast
and pray for the whole day. At the end of their fast, both of them
felt assured by God that Holy Spirit will convict the people and that
they will get victory. The next day Charles preached to them again
but he could see the difference. Many who attended could not hold
up their heads during the whole meeting, as they were feeling guilty
of rejecting Jesus in the previous day. On that day, God worked mightily
in the meeting.
After the meeting was over when people were leaving, Charles saw a
woman who was dumb and could not speak. He accepted the request to
stay with them and to pray for that woman. After sixteen hours of
speechlessness, her mouth was opened and she sang a new song by the
mighty power of God. She told him that, she never knew the Lord though
she thought that she was walking in the ways of God. But two days
prior to her healing she heard Charles message and repented
and turned to God.
Once a woman came to Charles and told him that she was shown a dream
in her childhood days that she would be in heaven and her eternity
was secure. Charles spoke to her and found out that she was not saved
and that her life was not holy before God. So Charles told her in
a very polite manner that she was given false hope through her dream.
But it offended her a lot and she got very angry with Charles. A Few
days later she died in her misery. At her last moment she realized
that she was heading towards hell as she said that she needed more
holy life and a life of repentance in order to go to heaven.
Many repented from their sin but some could not believe in Charles
preaching. One old man was very angry and often spoke badly about
Charles Finney. And he refused to attend the meetings. One day he
collapsed and Doctor was called. Doctor said that he could live only
for a very short time and told him to speak a brief statement what
he wanted. He spoke with his stammering voice, "Don't let Finney
pray over my corpse." And he died with all the bitterness and
without repentance to God.
But God used Charles Finney in a mighty way among those who were opposing
him. One day many of them came and told him that they believe in God
and wanted to give up their wrong ways. Once Charles was preaching
in a meeting and he had no idea that a man planned to kill him. While
he was preaching, he saw a strong man falling down from his chair.
He was screaming miserably saying, I am going to hell. Charles stopped
his
preaching and the rest of the time they all prayed for that man. Next
morning that man came and said that he spent a restless night without
sleep. He also told him that he came in the meeting to kill him with
a pistol in his pocket. But he repented from his sin and found new
hope in Christ and became a new person. He did not oppose Charles
after that.
